The D Gray-Man Anime spans 103 episodes, based on the Manga that has won a number of prizes and awards across the globe. Directed by Osamu Nabeshima and originally brought to life by Shonen Jumps Katsura Hoshino, the D Gray-Man anime first aired in October 2006 in Japan.
D Gray-man follows the exploits of a young fifteen year-old boy, Allen Walker, the main protagonist with a dark past. Allen was discarded by his biological parents because he was born with a misshapen arm. He was taken in by and grew up with his foster father Mana Walker. Stricken by grief at the tragic death of Mana, Allen enlisted the help of a mysterious figure, Millennium Earl, to help resurrect him. Shockingly, the resurrection transformed Mana into an evil demon known as an Akuma and we learn of the Millennium Earls plan of preying on grief stricken loved ones to create an army of Demon Akuma to destroy man-kind. During the process Allen’s arm is transformed into a demon slaying weapon and his eye cursed with the power to see Akuma’s.
With his new power Allen becomes humanity’s last hope at destroying the approaching evil that threatens to destroy everyone. Allen joins an ultra secret group known as the black order, who train him to harness his powers to destroy the evil Millennium Earl and his growing army of soul eating demons, the Akuma’s.
D Gray-Man is set in a fictional 19thCentury and exudes dark historical, atmospheres and themes. Very much a supernatural action anime series with heavy doses of horror, drama and fantasy, topped off with those light-hearted, intruding elements of random comedy that we have come to know and love.
