Code Geass : Lelouche of the Rebellion is an award winning Anime that first aired in Japan in October 2006. Spanning two series and 51 episodes, Code Geass is directed by Goro Taniguchi, written by Ichiro Okouchi and brought to life by the Japanese Anime Studio, Sunrise Inc.
The world has been divided by 3 main superpowers, The Holy Empire of Britannia, The Chinese Federation and The Euro Universe. Japan has been crushed and conquered by the force of the Empire of Britannia, using high-tech Mech robots known as Knightmare frames to inflict their domination. Suppressed and stripped of its rights, Japan is now known as “Area 11” and its inhabitants the “Elevens”.
Code Geass follows Lelouche Lamperouge the son of the emperor of Britannia, emotionally scarred as a child by the assassination of his mother, Lelouche lashes out at his father for not protecting her and rejects his country and his rights to the throne. As a result his father banishes him to Japan, where he spends the rest of his childhood and forms a strong friendship with Suzaku Kururugi the son of Japans last Prime minister.
At the age of 17 Lelouche stumbles upon a group of rebel Elevens and is bestowed the power of Geass by the mysterious CC, granting him the power to control people at will. Using his new found power he becomes the masked revolutionary known as “Zero” and under this guise forms a rebel group known as The Black Knights to liberate the oppressed and restore Japans independence. At the same time, Suzaku, now an accepted soldier of Britannia, becomes the pilot of a state of the art Knightmare Frame known as The Lancelot. What follows is a cruel twist of fates, as both childhood friends are thrust into battle as they swear allegiance to their own bloods mortal enemies.
Code Geass was an instant success in Japan and the West alike, securing a host of top anime awards, including best and most popular anime series. The series brings themes of science fiction, action, drama and supernatural elements that combine with an electric and in-depth cast of characters and an action-packed, well thought-out and slightly controversial narrative to make Code Geass: Lelouche of the Rebellion a stand out anime series among the new generation of Anime.
